Penetrant dwell and developing times

Pick the specification and the part temperature to see the minimum dwell, any maximum, and the developing or interpretation window, each with the clause it comes from.

Where each figure comes from

  • Standard temperature range: 40–125 °F (5–52 °C), ASME V T-652.
  • Minimum dwell: ASME V T-672 and Table T-672 (50–125 °F [10–52 °C]). Or as qualified by demonstration for the application (T-672). The penetrant must not dry during dwell.
  • Maximum dwell: ASME V T-672. 2 h, or as qualified by demonstration.
  • Interpretation: ASME V T-676.1 (final interpretation). Longer is permitted if bleed-out does not alter the results; large surfaces are examined in increments. Starts when dry developer is applied, or as soon as a wet developer coating is dry (T-675.3).

Formula

  • Minimum dwell = the document's figure for the material and form (E165 Table 2, ASME V Table T-672; 10 min flat in E1417; 5 min or the maker's in ABS)
  • From 40 °F up to 50 °F: E1417 20 min; E165 20 min (recommended); ASME V and ABS twice the figure
  • ABS: developing ≥ max(10 min, 2 × dwell) and ≤ 60 min, so dwell ≤ 30 min (derived)

Units. Times in minutes. Temperatures in °F or °C with their own switch; each document's own °C figures are used when you type °C (E1417 and E165 start at 4 °C, ASME V and ABS at 5 °C).

Assumptions and limits

  • Outside 40–125 °F (4 or 5 °C to 52 °C, as each document prints it) none of the four gives a time: the procedure has to be qualified for that temperature.
  • E165's dwell times are recommendations; the penetrant maker's time governs (§8.5.1). Your procedure, or a customer's, may ask for longer.
  • ABS states no maximum dwell. The 30 min shown is worked out from its developing rules (at least twice the dwell, at most 60 min), not printed in it.
  • Developing time starts when dry developer goes on, or when a wet developer coating has dried.
